The song was co-written by Trainor and Kevin Kadish, was produced by Kadish, and was released by Epic Records on March 17, 2015, as Trainor's third single. "Dear Future Husband" is a doo-wop song; its lyrics comprise a list of factors her love interest should be aware of before proposing to her.

"Dear Future Husband" received mixed reviews from music critics. It became Trainor's third consecutive single to reach the top ten in South Africa and Australia, peaking at numbers four and nine respectively. The single reached number twenty-six in the United States, becoming Trainor's third top-thirty hit in that country.
